Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about using MigrantPortal to help migrant families.

Getting Started

What is MigrantPortal?
MigrantPortal connects immigrant and refugee families in need with volunteers, faith communities, and organizations who want to help. Navigators submit needs on behalf of families; responders like you fulfill those needs.
Who can use MigrantPortal?
Anyone can sign up. Navigators are trusted professionals (caseworkers, teachers, social workers) who submit needs on behalf of families. Responders are volunteers, churches, or individuals who help fulfill those needs. All accounts are reviewed before activation.
Is the app free to download?
Yes — MigrantPortal is completely free for all users. Download it on the Google Play Store.

Responding to Needs

How do I respond to a need?
Browse open needs in the Feed or Map tab. Tap any need to view details, then tap "Respond to this Need." You can offer items, services, funds, or volunteer time. The family's navigator will be notified.
What happens after I respond?
The navigator who submitted the need will review your response and coordinate with you directly via the in-app chat. You'll receive a notification when they accept. Once fulfilled, the need is marked complete.
What types of needs can I help with?
Needs span housing, food, clothing, furniture, transportation, employment, legal aid, medical, education, and translation services. Filter by category in the Feed to find what matches your skills or resources.
What does "Partially Met" mean?
A partially met need has received some help but still requires more. For example, a family needed $300 and received $150 — the need stays open for additional responders to cover the remaining amount.

Donations & Funding

When I fund a request, where does the money go?
Monetary donations are coordinated through the submitting organization or navigator. MigrantPortal does not process payments directly. The navigator will provide instructions for how to transfer funds safely.

Volunteering & Shifts

How do volunteer shifts work?
Organizations post volunteer shifts for ongoing events (food distributions, ESL classes, etc.). You can sign up via the Schedule tab in the app. Your hours are logged automatically once a shift is marked complete.
What am I responsible for when I respond?
You commit to following through on what you offered — whether that's delivering items, providing a service, or donating funds. If your situation changes, please communicate promptly through the chat so the family isn't left without help.

Privacy & Safety

How is my personal information used?
Your name and organization are shared with the need's navigator when you respond, so they can coordinate the handoff. Your contact details are never shared publicly. Review our full Privacy Policy.
Is family data kept confidential?
Yes. MigrantPortal does not display family names, addresses, or contact information publicly. Only the navigator and accepted responders can see coordination details. Navigators must agree to a data confidentiality policy at sign-up.

Support

I have more questions — who do I contact?
Reach out to your local organization coordinator, or tap the chat icon on any need to message the submitting navigator. For platform issues, email support@migrantportal.com.
